What the Character Counter does
The character counter tells you exactly how long a string is, with and without spaces, so you can fit meta descriptions, title tags, social posts and ad copy inside their limits.
How it works
The tool counts every character in your text, then repeats the count with whitespace removed. It also reports word count, line count and the UTF-8 byte size, which matters when a field has a byte limit rather than a character limit.
Because it updates as you type, you can trim a sentence until it lands inside the recommended range for the field you are filling.
How to use the Character Counter

- 3Compare it against the limit for your field (for example 155 characters for a meta description).
- 4Trim or expand until you are inside the range.
- 5Copy the final string into your CMS or ad platform.
Character Counter questions
Aim for roughly 150 to 160 characters. Google may rewrite it, but staying in that range keeps the full description visible in most results.
Keep title tags under about 60 characters so they are not truncated in search results.
Some platforms and SMS gateways count characters excluding spaces, so the second figure helps you stay within those limits.
Fields such as database columns or API parameters often have byte limits. Accented and emoji characters use more than one byte, so the byte count can exceed the character count.
