Why not just paste real text?

Real copy is usually the better choice for final designs — real words have real lengths and emotional weight, and typography should be tested against them eventually. But during early layout, real text creates two problems: people proofread it instead of reviewing the layout, and a draft’s actual length rarely matches the final copy. Lorem ipsum is deliberately meaningless and deliberately average, which makes it a neutral measuring stick for structure: headline heights, line lengths, paragraph rhythm, and how a page behaves at 200 words versus 800.

Placeholder text must never reach production. Pages published with lorem ipsum are effectively empty pages — thin content that helps no one, and which can dilute a site’s overall quality if it becomes a pattern at scale. Google’s guidance on scaled and unhelpful content targets pages that exist without adding value, and a page of scrambled Latin is the definition of that. How to interpret the results

Treat generated lorem ipsum as a length simulator, not as content. A paragraph of lorem ipsum behaves like a paragraph of any Latin-script language: average word length, average sentence, no headings or links. That’s exactly what makes it useful for judging whitespace, line height and column width — and exactly why it can’t tell you whether the real copy will communicate. It answers “does this layout hold 600 words comfortably?”, never “is this page any good?”.

Example 1 — testing a blog template

A new blog template needs to handle both 300-word news posts and 2,500-word guides. Generate 2 paragraphs and paste them into the article body; then regenerate at 12 paragraphs. If the sidebar, share buttons and footer behave at both lengths, the layout is robust.

Use lorem ipsum during wireframing, design comps, template development, CMS previews, prototyping and client presentations where copy doesn’t exist yet or would distract from layout decisions. It’s also handy for testing text-handling behaviour: truncation, line clamping, maximum lengths in forms, and responsive typography.

Stop using it the moment real copy is available — and never let it ship. If a staging site with placeholder text can be crawled, exclude it from indexing (a robots.txt rule or noindex on staging) until launch.

• Shipping placeholder text to production. The classic launch-day embarrassment — and a content-quality problem if search engines index it.
• Using lorem ipsum to test readability tools. Readability formulas on meaningless Latin produce meaningless scores. Test with representative real copy.
• Mocking up every design with the same three paragraphs. Real content includes headings, lists, links and tables. Test layouts against those elements too, or the design will break when real copy arrives.
• Leaving a crawlable staging site full of placeholders. Block indexing on staging environments so duplicate thin pages never enter the index.

• Match the volume: test layouts with the length of copy you actually expect, not a default three paragraphs.
• Replace placeholder with real copy before any user testing — comprehension testing needs real words.
• Keep a “no lorem ipsum in production” checklist item in your launch QA process.
• For text-handling tests (truncation, clamping), combine generated filler with edge cases: one extremely long word, an empty state, a single character.

• It carries no meaning. Lorem ipsum can’t test comprehension, tone, translation or accessibility of the actual message.
• Latin-script only. It doesn’t simulate the length or line-breaking of non-Latin scripts; for multilingual designs, test with representative text in each language.
• No semantic structure. Real pages need headings, lists and links — placeholder paragraphs don’t exercise those components.

• It looks like random Latin. It is — by design. The original passage is from Cicero’s De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, altered over the centuries so the result is untranslatable gibberish with natural-looking statistics.
• My generated text repeats. Generators commonly draw from a fixed classic passage, so long outputs can repeat phrases. For layout purposes this is fine; for very long tests, regenerate or combine outputs.
• Stakeholders keep reading the placeholder. Add a “placeholder copy” label in the mock-up, or switch to greyed-out realistic text so attention moves to the layout.
